A website for genealogical research into the families that have the namesO`hAilpe`ne,O`hAilpin, Halpenny, Hapenny, Hapeny, Halfpenny, Halpin, and the many derivations of our name. The name originated around 900AD to 1000AD from the Celts and Pics, and was anglicized by the English starting around 1600AD. There are many other spellings of the name. The name supposedly originated in County Monaghan and is currently residing in Counties Monaghan, Louth, and Meath. The name is pronounced Hapenny in most of County Louth, but is pronounced Halpenny in most other parts of Ireland. The Halpin name originated in counties Limerick and Clare, but in modern times Halpenny has been abbreviated to Halpin in many cases. See Origin of the Name Halpenny from More Irish Families by Edward ManLysaght under General Information.
This website is a place for all of us carrying the name to meet and share family information. There are several families that we have genealogical information on. At this point the various families have not been connected, but it is my feeling that most of the Halpennys in Ireland and those that have migrated through the world are related. There are Halfpennys who most assuredly have come from England and the name originated there because of the halfpence rent charged peasants during the middle ages. Our name Halpenny's derivation means alp or stout little man. I fit that derivation to a T, but my Uncle that passed away in 2001 was about 6ft and has always been very slender.
The Website will contain buttons for each of the families that we have information on and those we do not as yet have information on. In time all of the information we have will be available on the site.
An Alphabetical Index of Family Names includes Boyd, Carter, Chamney, Clark, Coad or Codd, Dickson or Dixon, Ellis, Giltrap, Halpenny and it's derivations, Henry, Jackson, Lewis, McGill, Minions, Moulton, Murphy, Reilly, Styles, Stewart, Tennant, Twamley, and Watchorn. These names are associated with the families before and after they actually came to Canada. Hopefully we will add some of these families as we go along.
